Makeup Tips - Application of Foundation and Concealer

Apply concealer lightly. A little bit can go a long way.

Don’t overdo the foundation. The goal here is to look as naturally beautiful as possible.

Always choose a foundation tone that matches your skin. Going too dark or too light is a mistake all women make. Test out your foundation in the store and make sure you have good lighting when you test it. Don’t test color on the inside of your wrist, test on your jaw line.

You should never apply foundation to your neck to make the color match your face. If there is a color difference, you are using a shade of foundation that is too dark.

Make sure you buy the correct type of foundation for your skin. If you have dry skin, use a liquid foundation and use powder or mineral foundation if you have oily skin.

If you have sensitive or problematic skin, don’t invest on cheap foundation because the cheaper brands can irritate your skin. Higher-end brands can actually improve the quality of your skin rather than irritating it.

If you need a lot of coverage on your face, use a liquid foundation followed by dusting, powdered foundation and then a translucent powder. Using the different types of foundations together will provide maximum protection and coverage and will look more natural than if you just cake one type of foundation on.

ALWAYS apply moisturizer before you start, to protect your skin.

Avoid touching your face during the day. You may rub off your foundation and you will be putting unnecessary oil on your face that may cause blemishes.

Be aware that your skin type may change over the year; your skin will probably be dryer in the winter and more oily in the summer. Use different types of foundation accordingly.

If you use makeup brushes to apply foundation make sure you wash them regularly because oil and dirt build up on them and you don’t want to put that on your face everyday. Nearly all brushes can be washed with a mild liquid soap, rinsed well and hung upside down to dry.

Foundation Concealer Compact

1 Start by washing your hands to prevent touching your face with dirty hands. If your hands are dirty when you apply your makeup, you may get blemishes or pimples. Try using clean makeup sponges or brushes to apply foundation to avoid this risk.

2 Cleanse, tone and apply moisturizer to your entire face. This will protect your skin and make the makeup appear more natural.

Solid Concealer

3 Apply your concealer to your under-eye circles and to any blemishes on your face. Work with the direction of the eye muscle fibers to avoid unnecessary stretching of this delicate area. Tap the concealer on, working from the outside of the eye to the inside near the nose. Use a concealer with a peach or yellow undertone to counteract the dark color of under-eye circles. Use a green concealer to cover the red of broken capillaries or blemishes. Green cancels out red as they are opposite each other on the color wheel.

Foundation and Conceler

4 Apply your foundation with a sponge. Less is best. The aim is to even out the skin tones, not apply an opaque mask. Don’t apply to the neck, rather take it just under the jawline to avoid lines of demarkation.

5 Dust your face lightly with a translucent powder immediately after applying your foundation to give a nice matte finish and hold the coverage in place. The only time not to do this is if your skin is dry as powders tend to draw moisture up and out of the skin.

6 Apply any other makeup you may want to wear.

7 Look at your face closely in the mirror to make sure there are no spots of foundation that are not blended in properly. Also, if possible, ask another member of the household to make sure there are no spots that you didn’t see.

8 You’re set for the day! Follow these steps and you won’t have to worry about reapplying during the day.

Today for our YST readers we bring forth a technique that is used by all the makeup artists in the world. A technique that can transform the face shapes when done the right way.

Contouring is the art used in makeup to give the face or any other part of the body a more sculpted look. It plays a very important role in transforming your face.  The art is used to downplay the flaws or to push back the areas that are naturally receding. Generally a matte colour is chosen that is two shades darker than one’s skin tone to contour. The idea is to apply the colour and blend it well so that there are no harsh lines. You get contouring powders in the market. If you have a darker foundation than your skin tone, you could also put it to use for this purpose.

Common Areas To Contour –

• Under the cheek bones
• Jaw line
• Temples
• Bottom of the chin
• Along both sides of your nose
• Crease of your eyes

Healthy Skin Routine - Cleansing, Toning & Moisturing

Cleansing

A good cleansing routine is essential for removing makeup and dirt, which can block your pores and can lead to an outbreak in spots. Cleansing should be done twice daily. Cleansing too frequently can strip the skin of its natural oils, which will make those with dry skin have even drier skin. It will also make those with oily skin have even oilier skin, as the glands will become more active to replace it.

Healthy Skin Routine - Cleansing

Before starting to cleanse, you should wash your hands thoroughly to remove any dirt or grease that might have built up.

To remove eye makeup such as mascara and eye shadow, use cotton balls or pads to apply eye cleansing lotion. Making sure your eyes are closed, gently wipe across your eyes until all eye makeup is removed.

To remove makeup, generously apply cleansing cream to your nose, chin, cheeks, forehead and around the top of your neck. Massage the cream into the skin, particularly concentrating on the corners of the mouth, the creases near the nose, the chin (which is especially prone to blackheads), and around the neck. Once the cream has been massaged in thoroughly, take a moist cotton pad, and start removing the cream from your face. Work from the sides of your face inwards to avoid rubbing cream into your hair.

Toning

Toning is the process of removing dead skin cells from your face, as well as removing any dirt, makeup or cleanser that may remain after cleansing. Toning will help keep your skin clear and firm by leaving you with a layer of new healthy skin cells.

Using cotton pads, apply toner around your nose and chin, across your cheeks and across your forehead.

Moisturizing

Exposed to the elements skin can lose its natural moisture, and you can be left with dry skin. This is also one of the main cause of wrinkles. As well as forming a barrier to the elements, moisturizing replenishes the skins natural moisture which help prevent dry skin and the formation of wrinkles. Unless you have very dry skin, always use a light moisturizer.

Healthy Skin - Moisturizing

Apply moisturizer lightly to your face using your finger tips. Start by rubbing the cream into your forehead, working outwards from the center. Gently apply the cream around the eyes, making sure you don’t get it too close to them. Massage the cream into your cheeks and around your jaw line, around your chin, mouth and nose, then around your throat and your neck.

Don’t apply too much moisturizer, as this will just sit heavily, and prevent your skin from breathing. Also make sure all excess cream is rubbed in.

This routine of Cleansing, Toning and Moisturizing has to be genuinely done both before applying makeup and while removing your makeup. If done on regular basis you will maintain a healthy skin.

Office Makeup Tips

Hello makeup lovers! Today we talk about what kind of makeup one should wear and what exactly to avoid when you enter the corporate environment.

Though it is important to stand out with your appearance, you should bear in mind of not going overboard. So read on;

Office makeup should be such that looks appealing, yet not over the top. Also, something which, you do not have to dedicate hours in the morning. Using the right products will minimize the touch up efforts throughout the day.

Things to remember –

• Stay away from glitter and shimmer. You do not want to be reflecting light like the tube lights in the office. Matte is the way to go.
• Try to make a good impression with your work and a good attitude and not those red lips. You want people to be listening to your ideas rather than pondering over the colour of your lips.
• Keep the smoky eyes look for the night clubs.

FACE

• Make sure to apply a primer on the face so that your foundation doesn’t crack or wear off. (MAC, Laura Mercier, Smashbox etc have good primers.)
• Keep the foundation matte.
• Always powder the face with a face powder to keep that shine at bay. Carry dry facial tissues or blotting papers to soak up any extra oil on the face. MAC. Sephora and Clean & Clear have good blotting papers.

EYES

• Play with neutral colours with matte, satin or velvet texture.
• Using light colours not only makes your look appealing but also makes you look wide awake.
• Keep the eyelines conservative and conventional. Avoid putting thick eyeliners or retro style liners. You can play with burgundy or brown colored eyeliners.
• Mascara is a must. Don’t even think of skipping it.
• Fill in your brows. It will frame the face and give you a more professional look.

CHEEKS

• Use a subtle color which is sheer, so that you can build up the color.
• MAC, Nars and Bourjois have some good shades.

LIPS

• Go with subtle pinks and nudes for the lips.
• Avoid using lip gloss, as the color might bleed.
• Always line your lips so that the products say put.

Lets get Organized - Makeup Organized

So, exactly what are the steps you need to take to get makeup organized.

• Take time and find a large area where you can spread everything out.

• Think of which items you use every day and put all of that in its own kit. Move everything else to other kits. Take out all of your makeup and skin care products and go through them. These are some of the most common items in a make up kit: Foundation, Concealer, Blush, Eyeshadow, Eyeliner,Powders, Lipstick, Bronzer.

• Unless you wear it daily you should organize a separate kit for formal, costume and special occasion makeup.Evaluate what you wear daily and what you don’t. Consider what you have time to apply and what is only used for special events. Be prepared to have 5-6 piles before you’re done. Gather your items into separate piles :

Daily wear : These are your basic colors that match almost anything you wear with the coordinating lipstick. Keep it simple unless you want to carry a suitcase around every day.

Skin care : This includes your moisturizers, makeup removers, serums, sunscreens, acne treatments, etc. You can also include cotton balls, q-tips, etc.

Makeup Removal : Removal of makeup may be necessary if you travel, play sports or just don’t like having make up on all day. To save space, buy a package of pre-moistened face cleansing cloths.

Special occasion : This includes more dramatic colors, infrequently worn colors, products you purchased to match special outfits, wild colors used for Halloween, shimmer powder you wear out to clubs, false eyelashes or anything else you rarely wear.

Seasonal (optional) : Tanning can cause your skin tone to vary from season to season. People who tan often have different foundation and powder shades they use in the summer. If you tan during the summer you may need to make an additional pile for your darker summer colors (or tan free winter colors).

• If you can’t remember how long you’ve had it you’ve probably had it too long. Old makeup and dirty applicators can cause irritation or infection.Dispose of anything that is old, broken or causes irritation. If it’s old, you should get rid of it. Old makeup collects bacteria, separates and may flake off or not apply as well.

Here are some general guidelines for how long you should keep an item before disposing of it:

Any other cream or gel based item for eyes
Face Powders which have had brushes or sponges in contact with the product.

Powder and cake eye shadows
Eye liners (pencil) providing it doesn’t harden, become difficult to apply or becomes dry.
Bronzer

• Pack nail polish and remover in your daily kit if you do daily or frequent touch ups. Otherwise, put it in a nail kit and store elsewhere.

• Get rid of the cheap applicators that come with your makeup. They collect bacteria and don’t clean up well. Use quality brushes instead.Look at your make up application tools. Are they sufficient? Dirty? Floating around in the bottom of a drawer or bag? These become dirty and bacteria filled quickly. Toss out any used sponge applicators that came with the makeup and invest in good washable brushes. Dispose of any dirty foundation sponges and powder puffs. By using clean brushes you can extend the life of your makeup by eliminating the amount of bacteria and oils you are introducing into it. Brush kits and brush bags are usually sold at mall makeup counters and makeup stores. The brush bags will keep your brushes organized, protect the brush ends from bending and keep your application tools clean.

• Clean application tools as needed. Clean eye liner by rubbing an alcohol soaked cotton ball over the pencil and sharpening the tip completely. Clean brushes in antibacterial soap and rinse until they are clean. If your brushes look tangled, deformed or if they are so full of makeup you don’t have to actually add make up each time, you need to dispose of those and start fresh.

• What size bag you will need. If you don’t have something big enough or with the necessary pockets you should start shopping. It’s always better to go with something slightly larger than something too small.It’s a great way to organize and store your makeup.Go shopping at a local drug, beauty supply, department or discount store and browse for makeup bags or kits. Make sure it can hold everything you plan on putting into it including your brush bag.
  Bags vary in size and shape. Look for something made for makeup as it will probably have an interior that will wipe clean, zip closed to avoid spilling and have padded or quilted exterior to offer extra protection. If you don’t carry your make up with you and only apply it at home you can use a basket or drawer to store your daily makeup.

• Keep the daily kit easily accessible.

• Put your brushes in their own bag or kit to keep them clean and protected and put this in your daily bag or kit.

Once this is done, Pat yourself on the back! Your makeup is organized and you should be on your way to a less stressful and efficient make up routine.

Some Extra Tips:

Buy quality products that are appropriate to your skin type (normal, oily or combination) and appropriate for your skin tone (fair, light, medium, tan, olive, dark, etc.)

With quality products, buy them from the same manufacturer – do NOT mix and match different brands. Skin products (cleanser, moisturizer, foundation, etc.) are formulated to work with one another. Mixing can create a chemical stew that harms the skin that you’re trying to protect.

Use smaller bags to organize your big bags. This is a great way to use the tiny bags that are often gifts at makeup counters. Use little bags to divide your eyes, lips, etc.

Tinted moisturizers often offer a sheerer coverage and are great to use in place of a foundation.

If you have a lot of new products, samples or gift with purchase items that don’t match your skin color or type you can arrange a trade with a friend or family member.

Never share your makeup, brushes or sponges with friends. If you must you should immediately clean them before using again. The bacteria and oils from their skin will contaminate your product and your skin causing break outs.
Dirty brushes cause breakouts.

Make up can often break or leak. Look for bags that zip or seal so a leak or break won’t ruin everything else.

The look is kept subtle. Read on, to know how you can achieve it.

• Keep the face matte with a foundation shade, that compliments your skin tone.
• Brush and fill your brows.
• Apply a matte brick color shade on to the eyelids, keeping it under the crease. Blend it well. Extend the color towards the outer corner of the eyes.
• Highlight with a light matte color under the brows.
• Apply a kajal on to the upper lashline and blend it with a blending brush.
• Go over it with a black eyeliner and flick it outwards to get the winged effect.
• Coat your lashes with some mascara.
• Apply a matte brick blush under your cheek bones to sculpt them.
• For the lips, apply a light brown shade of lipstick with an orange undertone to it.
• Lastly, do not forget to wear your smile with your makeup.

This is a bold look that emphasizes on the eyes keeping the rest of the face subtle. Sculpted cheeks adds to the look.

• Keep the face matte, with a foundation matching your skin tone. Do not go for shades that tend to make you look fairer as you might end up looking ghastly.
• Apply a concealer that covers your dark circles and blemishes.
• Powder your face with some loose powder and push it into the skin.
• Frame your face by making your brows and filling them in.
• For the eyes use a grey eye shadow on the lid staying under the crease. Apply the same color under the eyes as well.
• Now take a black eye shadow and blend it into your crease, extending it outwards to get that winged effect.
• Put a silvery grey eye shadow near your tear duct to open the eyes.
• Apply a thick coat of kohl pencil onto the lower lash line and water line.
• Apply an eyeliner onto the upper lash line.
• Put two coats of mascara onto your lashes.
• Sculpt your cheeks with a contouring powder.
• Add a neutral shade blush to add some color to the cheeks.
• Keep the lips simple with a nude lipstick.

• For the face use a matte finish foundation matching your skin tone.
• Use a concealer to get rid of any dark circles or blemishes.
• Brush your brows and fill the gaps to frame the face.
• Swipe a matte shade eye shadow, one shade darker than your skin tone, onto the lids. Make sure to stay under the crease.
• Use a waterproof kohl pencil onto the lower lashline and waterline. Do the same for the upper waterline as well.
• Swipe mascara onto the lower and upper lashes.
• Keep the cheeks soft with a matte neutral shade blush. Just a small amount of color is good enough for this look.
• Color the lips with a soft brown shade with a red undertone that compliments your skin tone.
