Ten Hot Nail Trends

Get a jump on these nail trends now! And why not? It’s the only makeup that YOU get to see all day! The big news with nails this season: nude is in. After an excess of oddball colors, the pendulum has swung in the opposite direction with an emphasis on pretty, wearable shades of cream and beige. That’s not to say there aren’t bolds and brights to be enjoyed. This is summer, after all. But it’s all about classic reds, soft nudes and mellow yellows mixed in with cool ombre and metallic designs. Welcome to your most flattering manicure season yet….

1) Lucite nails- While not exactly do-able at home the lattice-patterned. Lucite nails are worthy of all the screaming OMG’s! Just keep in mind that when you’re doing intricate prints on your nails, stick to one color. It makes the trend a little more wearable and also workplace-friendly.

2) Reverse French manicure- An adventurous, exotic manicure is the ideal way to experiment without going too far. For an update on the classic French manicure, a blue and gold mix makes for a surprisingly fresh look!

3) Chartreuse- The mellow-yellow hue walks the thin line between neutral and shocking. It’s simple and subtle, but if you catch it in the right light, it turns totally outrageous (in a good way of course).

4) Classic red- We keep going back to this classic for a good reason. It is the perfect combo of sophistication and sexiness—what else could you ask for in a nail color? To jazz up your red polish, apply a layer of high shine topcoat.

5) Natural hues. The rosy undertones make it sexy but still subtle enough for everyday wear. It’s a perfect contrast against the many printed clothing and accessories which are in trend this summer. Perfection is key with these shades, though—no chips, scuffs or slacking on the upkeep. Keep a rounded shape to elongate your hands. Try sheer golden nude for an update on this look.

6) Ombré manicure- With so many enticing options out there, deciding on a manicure hue is always tough. But thanks to ombré manicures, we don’t have to choose just one! The increasingly popular color-merging trend offers a subtle option. (Just in case you didn’t know, ombré means two different tones, a combination of dark and bright color.

7) Clean and simple- At the end of the day, sometimes you just want your old favorite. It’s universally flattering and oh so elegant!

8) Caviar manicure- Eating caviar may not be for everyone, but caviar nail art can work for even the most conservative of all. The Caviar Mani is a simple enough concept, embellishing nails with tiny multi-colored, black or white beads to create a three-dimensional caviar effect. We think it makes your nails look like a gorgeous little cupcake!

9) Minx- minx is a flexible polymer that is heated and then applied to nails, like a sticker. It is a mess free alternative to nail polish and fake tips. Get a perfect mirror finish with a chrome minx or create custom designs with patterned minx.

10) Tribal v-shaped manicures– the Spring tribal trend continues as a source of inspiration for nail art. A tribal pattern pulses off the nails and its asymmetric nature adds fun!

Classic Preppy

Nate Archibald from Gossip Girls has a lot going for him, from enviable eyebrows to porcelain veneers and pouty lips. But his Preppy look is why all the girls are crazy about him.

Nate Archibald’s modern preppy style has him sporting classic-fitting cotton pullovers, V-neck sweaters or vests over vibrant button-down dress shirts, cricket- cable sweaters, sports jackets, etc. Here’s how to cop his look.

Preppy clothing is bright, bold, and uber neat. Burn your t-shirts, and baggy jeans, preps like fitting and expensive (looking) clothes. Loosening your tie and adding sneakers looks spontaneous.

Ditch the cargo pants. Instead, try some well-cut khakis in a light color.

Solids and stripes are a safe bet, if you feel like being bold, try checks or plaid. Whatever you do, leave the collar down; a polo with a popped collar isn’t preppy, its pretentious.

Wear leather moccasins and boat shoes (top-siders) or leather flip flops in the summer. Wearing a pair of top-siders without socks is classic preppy.

For workday preppy, contrast-collar shirts make for an interesting change. Dress it up with a striped tie, corduroys, v neck sweater and penny loafers or two-tone brougues. A slim-fit, slim-lapel, two button jacket with houndstooth checks is vintage preppy. The navy blazer is a staple; you can try Madras plaid, tweed or corduroy as options. Brass buttons instantly identify a blazer as preppy.

For the weekend, a checked shirt in cotton and monochromatic polos with distressed jeans is great for when you’re stepping out. Khaki is the preppy equivalent of jeans – you can’t go wrong. Invest in a pair of lazy loafers to complete your summer look. Get a pair of white shorts, which can be rolled up above the knee for that extra element of style.

A clean shave is a must. No facial hair, whatsoever! Keep your hair simple. A common preppy hairstyle is the shaggy or fluffy look, or hair just parted on the side and short. Keep your hair looking natural.

Keep your lips moisturized. Chapped, cracked lips are unsightly. Always smell fresh, make sure your scent isn’t overpowering.

Don’t forget to accessorize with rimless glasses, striped belts, messenger bag and a cool watch.

Brands like GAP, Benetton, Polo by Ralph Lauren, Celio, Tommy Hilfiger define Preppy.

Neon Nights

Now, we know that neon is not new, but the idea of day-glo colors for evening wear certainly does feel fresh. These gowns/dresses are great inspiration for classy and formal evening wear , in case you have any black tie event on the horizon.

Jason Wu Spring Summer 2012

Jason Wu Spring Summer 2012

The easiest way to get the trend right is by using only one neon color per outfit. Pick a single bold colour to work into your look. The most popular hues are neon yellow-green, orange, shades of electric pink, turquoise and purple. Pick your favourite and go from there.

Don’t overdo it. Since ultra-bright colours can be overpowering, it’s best to keep the rest of your look simple and classic.

Of course, dresses aren’t the only way to add a fluorescent glow to your evening wardrobe. Liven up your ensembles with vibrant footwear, bags, belts and other accessories. Bangles or even bright nails can add the touch. It’s a great way to add contrast and colour.

We love how Eva Longoria has paired her neon pink jeans with a sheer white blouse and beige sandals, accessorizing with some pink teardrop earrings. Cop this look for a casual dinner outing.

We know you will love these electric ladylike looks as much as we do.

Keep in mind that you don’t need a haute couture budget to get the best neon-night look—we found loads of affordably priced bright pieces for you, take a look at them.

Denim on Denim

Far from being considered a fashion faux pas earlier, today’s denim-on-denim trend is considered quintessential casual chic. But the trick is all in the mix. Like all trends, this one too comes with its set of rules, follow them and you are ready to dive into the jean-pool!

The key rule is to combine pieces in different colors and washes. Don’t wear the same color denim top to bottom. Pair a medium wash shirt with a jean that’s a shade or two darker. Ashley Greene was spotted sporting this double denim style. She mixed her light shaded denim shirt with deep colored skinny jeans for that perfect look and finished her look with flats and a Chloe handbag (we love!).

You can even wear a denim shirt/jacket with black or white denim skinnies.

Nothing defines hot summer like a good pair of jean cutoffs. Redefine the wardrobe staple by adding denim up top, preferably with a chambray button-down. Keep it simple by avoiding tie- dyed, acid –washed or printed denim.

If you don’t want to wear a denim top and jeans, try pairing denim jeans with a denim handbag. Denim is a great balance for those loud prints you have but don’t know how to wear. Try pairing your denim look with a busy floral piece or bright stripes.

Accesorise with a pair of leather platform sandals, suede or leather belt a messenger bag, and you are good to go!

You can even break up the denim with a slew of metallic chains ala Cameron Diaz and Ashley Tisdale.

Now that you know the rules of the road, try out some of these pieces to create the right look:
